چکیده

Abstract. Psychological experiments on syllogistic reasoning have shown that participants did not always deduce the classical logically valid conclusions. In particular, the results show that they had di culties to reason with syllogistic statements that contradicted their own beliefs. This paper discusses syllogisms in human reasoning and proposes a formalization under the weak completion semantics.

Suhrawardi's Modal Syllogisms

Suhrawardi’s logic of the Hikmat al-Ishraq is basically modal. So to understand his modal logic one first has to know the non-modal part upon which his modal logic is built. In my previous paper ‘Suhrawardi on Syllogisms’(3) I discussed the former in detail. The present paper is an exposition of his treatment of modal syllogisms. On the basis of some reasonable existential presuppositi...

Syllogistic Reasoning in Seven Spaces

Syllogisms and syllogistic reasoning has been the subject of research and scientific discourse for more than two millennia. Syllogisms sum quantified assertions into an overall statement, usually consisting of two premises and one conclusion. While syllogistic reasoning can be modeled by classical first-order logic in a straightforward manner, it is an open question which of the possible syllog...

Some arguments are probably valid: Syllogistic reasoning as communication

Syllogistic reasoning lies at the intriguing intersection of natural and formal reasoning, of language and logic. Syllogisms comprise a formal system of reasoning yet use natural language quantifiers, and invite natural language conclusions. How can we make sense of the interplay between logic and language? We develop a computational-level theory that considers reasoning over concrete situation...

Towards a Mental Probability Logic

We propose probability logic as an appropriate standard of reference for evaluating human inferences. Probability logical accounts of nonmonotonic reasoning with system p, and conditional syllogisms (modus ponens, etc.) are explored. Furthermore, we present categorical syllogisms with intermediate quantifiers, like the “most . . . ” quantifier. While most of the paper is theoretical and intende...

The Concept of Fallacy is Empty A Resource-Bound Approach to Error

In recent years model-based reasoning has achieved a certain prominence among logicians and cognitive scientists. Its repute is deserved, notwithstanding that it has some vigorous rivals. Although both model-based and non-model-based systems aim at elucidations of good reasoning, there are certain issues that challenge them equally across the lines of their respective theoretical and methodolog...
